Genevieve Waller – June 13 – 28, 2025

The Red Barn Studio Museum is excited to welcome Genevieve Waller as our artist-in-residence from June 13–26. Waller, a Denver-based artist, curator, and writer, brings a unique perspective to her work, blending history, LGBTQ+ narratives, and unconventional materials to create thought-provoking sculptures, installations, and camera-less photography.

Originally from Wichita, Waller’s art practice is connected to Kansas history. During her residency, she will continue her research on LGBTQ+ figures from her home state, focusing on Wendell Sayers, an African American attorney from Nicodemus, KS. This new sculpture will join her existing 6 LGBTQ+ Kansans You Should Know series. She also plans to begin a textile piece exploring Kansas queer history and will visit local archives to gather material for an upcoming book on the subject.

Waller is also the founder and editor of DARIA: Denver Art Review, Inquiry, and Analysis, an art magazine highlighting contemporary work in Colorado. While in residence, she hopes to connect with local artists, venues, and writers to explore the possibility of launching a similar publication in Kansas.

Visitors can expect to see Waller working with unexpected colors and materials like scrubbing sponges, cellophane, beads, fabric, and drinking straws. She hopes her work will inspire conversations about history and the power of everyday materials in art.
