Lester’s Studio Sounds

The Red Barn Studio Museum is excited to share “Lester’s Studio Sounds,” our first-ever curated playlist, now on Apple Music and Spotify.

Inspired by the music mentioned in Lester’s letters to his dear friend Milford Greer, these playlists offer a sense of the sounds that may have filled the studio while he worked. In one letter, Lester wrote of a Mahler symphony that “shook me to the depths” and of Brahms, “this magnificent music flows about me and is beating at my heart.”

The playlist includes works by Brahms, Mahler, and Beethoven, and interpretations by conductors like Bruno Walter, as well as recordings by the Vienna and Berlin symphonies.

We will continue adding to the playlist as we learn more about what music Lester was listening to, thinking, and feeling deeply about. We invite you to follow our playlist and listen to the “magnificent music flowing about” Lester’s studio.
