Artist-in-Resident Apartment & Studio
The Raymer Society offers the artist-in-resident the use of a small apartment and studio space during their stay.
The apartment is located on the Red Barn Museum property, at the center of the property, nestled among a picturesque scene of trees and foliage. The Red Barn Studio Museum and artist-in-resident apartment is within easy walking distance of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on the campus of Bethany College, the Smoky Valley Arts and Folk Life Center, and the Lindsborg Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum, as well as plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining.
The apartment features a quaint sun porch, a complete kitchen, a full laundry room, a large bedroom with a queen bed, and a small twin-sized sofa bed, and a small bathroom with a shower and tub combo. With a blend of comfort and charm, it’s equipped with all the essentials to make your stay feel like home. View images below.
The museum property includes a few courtyards, the perfect spot for your morning coffee, and a large yard, which can be enjoyed at any time of day.
The Studio, a creative sanctuary, is located inside the Red Barn Studio Museum. Artists have the freedom of 24-hour access and a private entrance through the south door of the Red Barn Studio. View images below. Artists will be given a key to the apartment as well as a key to the studio. The studio is equipped with an alarm system, and you will be provided a code to arm and disarm the alarm if you need to access the studio outside of regular open hours.
Whether you’re seeking inspiration, connection, or simply a change of scenery, The Red Barn Studio Museum offers the perfect space for artists seeking solace and stimulation during their residency.
FAQs
Q: What kind of artwork is accepted at the residency?
A: Visual artists and writers of all kinds are welcome at the residency. Please note that the Red Barn Studio does not provide kilns or other art supplies or equipment for artists.
Q: What should I expect day to day during my residency?
A: Artists are expected to be active in the studio during the open hours of the Red Barn Studio: T-F 10am-5pm, Sa-Sun 1-5pm. Exceptions are made for artists working off-premises. As this is an open studio space in a museum, artists should expect visitors to their studio on a regular basis. These visitors may be guests on a tour of the Red Barn, or they may be guests who have specifically requested to visit with the artist. Artists should be prepared to greet visitors and share a bit about their working process if asked. All Artist sales go through the Red Barn Studio Museum Store, and checks are sent in the mail toward the middle of the following month of residency.
Q: Is there a fee for the residency?
A: We require a $35 nonrefundable application fee for any artist who is not a member of the Raymer Society. Otherwise, the studio space and accommodations are provided free of charge.
Q: Is there a stipend for artists?
A: There is no stipend provided for artists, but if artists or writers want to complete a project that benefits the community/the Smoky Valley Art Project or write about a historical Smoky Valley artist, there is a potential for grant funding through the Lindsborg Arts Council. The grant application can be found here.
Q: Is transportation provided?
A: Artists are expected to provide their own transportation. Lindsborg is very walkable, and the Red Barn Studio Museum and artist-in-resident apartment is within easy walking distance of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on the campus of Bethany College, the Smoky Valley Arts and Folk Life Center, and the Lindsborg Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum, as well as plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining.
Q: Does the residency provide anything else?
A: Artists are provided with studio space and accommodations, but are required to provide their own meals, supplies, and transportation.
Q: How long is the application open?
A: Applications are open from August-December for the year after next (Example: Applying in August 2026 for a residency in 2028).
Q: When/how will I know if I have been accepted into the residency?
A: You will receive an email in the first six months of the year after applying, confirming your residency dates.
Q: What if I need to cancel my residency or change the dates?
A: To make any changes to your residency, please contact the Red Barn Studio.

Q: Can I sell my artwork at the Red Barn?
A: Artists can sell their artwork at the Red Barn; the artist receives 75% of the sale price, and the Red Barn receives 25%. When pricing your artwork, please keep this in mind, as we do not add the 25% to the price on behalf of the artist.
Q: Where do I hang my artwork for display and sales?
A: Artists may hang their artwork in the Artist-in-Resident studio space both to sell and display during their residency. Artworks for sale or display that need wall space should be ready to hang. We use the Walker Hanging System for all hanging displays.

- 4 walls (2 full and 2 partial) for hanging artwork
- 10 folding tables and 1 wooden table
