Ellie Murphy, Artist-In-Residence

October 25, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - November 8, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

Sculptor, Ellie Murphy, from Queens, New York, will be returning to Lindsborg, where she grew up, as an Artist-in-Residence, Sunday, October 25 through Sunday, Nov 8 at the Red Barn Studio, 212 S. Main St., Lindsborg.  Murphy will have a workshop titled “Fiber Art Wall Hangings,” Sat, Nov 7, 2020, 1:30PM to 3:30PM. The cost for members is $30, for non-members $45, with a minimum of 3 participants and maximum of 6. While Murphy will provide dowels, yarn, fiber basics and scissors, please feel free to bring your own yarn, fiber, and/or cloth scraps. Additionally, bring a wooden dowel, small branch or other frame and beads or other “fun” add-ons. This class is suitable for all ages.  Children under 6 may need help.  For her residency, she says, “. . . I would like to create a unique site-specific piece for the Red Barn Studio with some pieces extending possibly into the studio on the staircase and banisters, something like the fiber-fringe pieces in my work samples, but unique for the space.  In my mind, I have a working title of ‘Grandfathers.’ I also, would like to, if there is time, make a few smaller encaustic pieces on paper in the studio.”   Of her artwork, she says, “I like exploring the relationship between personal and cultural nostalgia in subject matter, material and method.  I make work that straddles the childhood/adulthood line while questioning the fine art/traditional craft form border.  My art combines references to doll hair, crafts, folk motifs and Americana from my 1970’s childhood in Kansas.  I see interdependence between the multiplicities of cultures in our world and make sculpture as a way of recognizing and playing with the unintended and humorous connections between them.  I am also trying to make a physical picture of the rhythm and repetition at the heart of ordinary life.  How do the actions of one individual, one strand work in relation to the whole or the whole of society?  Do the fibers work together with or in opposition to each other?”  Ellie Murphy attended the Washington University School of Fine Art in St. Louis, MO with an MFA and the Yale University School of Art, in New Haven, Conn with a BFA.  Ellie’s art, biography, contact information and lots of other information may be seen at ellie-murphy.com.
